AX AMBITIOUS SCHEME MAORI TOURNEY. * The proposals made in connection with the annual tournament of the Maori Tennis Association, to ho held this season at. Wanganui, are ambitious, for they include a series of functions which 'will have no direct connection with the game of tennis. The tournament will open on Easier Saturday, and will continue through to the following Thursday when the finals in all sections will be played out. Teams from all parts of the North Island are expected to enter for the handicap and championship events, and the Ngatiporou (East Coast), representation will probably be very strong. The tournament will be carried on in conjunction ■with a big Maori convention, at which the principal speakers will he the Hon. Sir Maui I’omare, Sir Jas. Carroll, M.L.C., the Hon. A. T. Ngata, M.P..| and Dr. P. Buck. Sir James will give an address on the subject of polities, lpast and present, as affecting the native race, Dr. Buck will deal with Maroi history, with special reference to the original home and migration of the race, and the Hon. Air. Ngata will quote Hie past and deline the future development of Maori lands by agriculture and general farming. Sir Maui Pomare’s subject will bo the education of the native race, and an address on religion and its effect upon the Maori people will he delivered by the llev. F. A. Bennett. Concerts, dances, and recitals will be included in the programme of the gathering.
