ZENANA MISSION

DR, CARTER’S VISIT. Interesting lectures are to be delivered in Gisborne to-morrow and on Friday by the Rev. Dr. Thomas Carter, general secretary of Tho Zenana Bible and Medical Mission of India, who is visiting Gisborne in the interests of the mission. Dr. Carter has a great record of service behind him, and during the war he was Presbyterian chaplain at the King George Military Hospital in London, where ho met many New Zealand soldiers. Dr. Carter wants to interest the Gisborne people in missionary work, for he believes that, through the agency of Ihe Christian churches tlie danger of the Orient to New Zealand and Australia will ho averted. The Zenana. Mission was founded in 1852 by .tlie late Lady Kinnaird. It worked entirely among the women and girls of India. It had 400 workers, of whom 100 were English and the rest Indian. New Zealand is especially interested 1 in Jaunpur, an ancient Moslem city, about 80 miles from Benares. The New Zealand auxiliary of the mission has generously borne more than three nai ls of the. yearly expenses there, and it is hoped it will undertake the entire responsibility for tho future. There are 60.000.000 women iu India, secluded in zenanas, that is, they are locked up l>v their husbands in tlie harems and live utterly secluded lives. It is tho "rout work <>f Ihe -mission to carry the. Gospel to these unfortunate 1 creatures. The mission had established the first hospital for women in India. This is Hie Lady Kinnaird Hospital in Lucknow, which is still doing good work.
