TROUT FRY DIE

aivsTMKiocs ocytkbknct:. A SI'i’iSTANTI Al. LOSS. (For Press Association.) AI'CIvLAND, last night. About lY’.Ono trout fry hied in a most mysterious manner last night on the Auckland railway station platform. One of the officials from the Ooverniuent hatchery at Rotorua arrived in Auckland with about L'0.,000 trout fry for liberation in the Whangarei district.. The fry are carried in cans something like a uiilk can. and have to lie attended to every little while like delicate children. As the Whangarei train did not leave until this morning the fry had to spend a night in Auckland. lhe cans were placed on one of the back platforms'to be out of the wav. The hatching official attended to the fry at regular intervals, and the last time ho did so was about - o’clock, when everything was all right. Ironic of the railway employees also saw the try about that time. When the hatchery official went back at about half-past A o’clock to attend to his charges he was astounded to find that about half of them were dead. It looked as though something had been put into the water. Anyhow. whatever the cause there was no doubt that about .half the fry had succumbed. This is a very unfortunate loss, as fry is very delicate stuff to carry over long distances, and it will be some time before it can be replaced.
