Glorious weather ruled for the second day of the Australian .Jockey Club's spring" meeting, and (lie truck was in good order. The altendance was 19,000. New Zealand's representation was again numerous. The Hawk av;is much fancied in the Shorts, hut he gave a poor display. Ho was last away from the barrier, and ran up into third from last rounding the bend. Young Loehinvar and (Jiggle were never prominent. The time, 1.102, was a. course record. Agrion was the only New Zculandcr amongst the 'two-year-olds, but never got going. He dropped buck after the first furlong and finished eighth. Twoiity-ihree- horses faced the harrier for the Metropolitan Handicap, including Count Cayour and Star Stranger. Fujisan was the first away, being closely followed by North Logan, with Count. Cavotir and Star Stranger always handy. Pantheon, who was second last when passing the stand, passed round the field when going out of the back. Fujisan led into the straight and it was there that Star Stranger came up on the outside and gained a comfortable lead. Pantheon pushed his way through the bunch, but Star stranger' beat him off and won easily with a length and a-half to spare. 'Count Cavour was always handy. In the Steeplechase King Abbey was well back when he foil at the halt: mile. Neither horse nor jockey was injured. Bright Light was .last most of the way. Royal Tea and Reonui ran a good race for second place in the Grantham Stakes. They were together most of the way a few lengths behind Greenhorn. 'Royal Tea proved the better horse and' finished one and a-half lengths ahead of his stable mate. Following are the results: — The Shorts: Calmist Sr2 (Davidson) 1, Golden Voice 7.12 (Duncan) 2, Cawnpore 8.0 (R. Reed) J. Thirteen started, including The Hawk, Young Lochiuvar. and Giggle. Calmist was the first away and led into the straight, winning easily by a length and a half. Cawnpore was half a head away, after being always handy. Time, I.los. Breeders' Plate: Bcckwith 5.2 (Crackuell) 1, Vio.lian §,5 (Bartlc) 2, Laneham 5.2 <R. Reed) 3. Fourteen started, including Agrion.' From an even start Vidian took the lead from Inducement, Wcdara, Bcckwith and Laneham and this order was maintained till entering the straight. Bcckwith went ahead two furlongs from home and Avon by half a length. Time, 1.01. Metropolitan Handicap: Star Stran ger 8.9 (R. Reed) 1, Pantheon jj.6 (Crackuell) 2, Vitality B.U (Munro) W. Ml the. twenty-three acceptors started. Fujisan led' the first time round, and going out of the straight was hall, a, length ahead of North Logan, followed by Count Cuvour, Piastoon, Boonala, Star Stranger and Vitality. Yalaniita Avas last with Pantheon just ahead of him. This order Avas maintained practically till the straight was reached,

but Pantheon had moved up to a handy position. About a furlong from home Star Stranger established a lead and staving off all challenges won by a length and a-half. a neck between second' and third. Time, 2.-J4. First Steeplechase: Minterne, 12.12. I; Pay Day. 11.2, 2; Reparation. 10.0, 3. Light started, including King Abbey, Bright Light. .Minterne established a good lead early and held it till entering the straight, when Pay Day and Prince Arim headed him, but Minterne came on and won by two lengths. Time. -1.41. Prince Ariin's rider lost his saddle in the straight. Grantham Stakes: Greenhorn. 7.1?>, 1; Royal Tea, 7.10, 2: Reonui, 7.:;, 3. Eight' started, including Battlement. Larkspur established a good lead from the. jump, with Reonui second, and Royal Tea well back, but at the six furlongs post the last-named Avas level with Reonui a few lengths behind Larkspur. In a close finish Greenhorn won by half a length, Reonui being a length and a-half behind Royal Tea. Time. 1.51. Kensington Handicap: Yaals, B.lrf, 1; The Cause, 9.10, 2; Siaosi, 7.10, 3. Nineteen started. Vaals led most of the way and won in a canter by three lengths'. Siaosi made a good run in tho straight aud was a long head behind The Cause. Time, 1.201,. a course record.
