' Having continued resistance for .°>2 days, the city of Wuchang holds up the "Bed" army's-advance, proving a serious setback. The Cantonese 'cannot afford to leave the hostile city in the rear, and the defending army 1 is determined to resist till exterminated. Meantime, thousands of natives are dead and dying of starvation. Grain supplies are exhausted and even the soldiers are killing and eating horses and other animals. Crowds of all nations thronged in queues outside the Cathedral for a long time before the opening. International naval commanders, consuls, and military and naval forces attended in full regalia, and also military representatives. Sunchuanfang offered the condolences of the Chinese. " Red" sympathisers plan holding a memorial gathering for the Chinese killed. Agitators of the anti-British movement are seeking a monster demonstration in the foreign settlement.
