SYDNEY, Oct. 3. ■ The opening day of the Australian Joekey Club's spring meeting was held in glorious weather. After the recent rains the track was inclined to be holding. The'attendance was 85,000. New Zealand was strongly represented. Limerick. Rapine, Star Stranger, Count Cavour, and Runuymcde were among the most prominent. Bright Light and Knighthood were New Zealand's representatives in trie Hurdles. Loophead early established a good lead from Autrolite and Tedwin, with Knighthood lying handy in. a good position. He went to the front entering the back, and was five lengths to the good on entering the straight, but unfortunately struck the last hurdle. Willanjie cam© up inside, and in a desperate finish gained the verdict by three-quar-ters of a length. Knighthood was only half a neck ahead of Grey Knight. Reonui and Battlement made the early running in the Trial Stakes, but the kitter faded out going along the back. Reonui kept the lead till entering the straight, when Coolgong and Larkspur, who'had always been handy, came up, the former gaining a narrow victory. MeCarten rode a well-judged race. Limerick was noticeably lame in the near hind ley before entering the course for the Derby. Rampiotn took the lead, closely followed by Limerick and Karon. The pace was fast. Royal Tea was then last. The pace slackened going along the back, and Royal Tea run up to fifth. Passing the six furlongs post Limerick hended Rampian, who dropped back, butentering Iho; straight the latter made a great run to the front, and in a hardfought finish beat Limerick by a length and a-half. i Amounis was New Zealand's only representative in. the Epsom. From a good start Fujisan took the lead early from Hecateon. At the five furlongs post Amounis ran into third place behind Aorangi and Hecateon, Bravado and Red Gauntlet following closely. Fujisan was the- first into the straight, followed by Aorangi and Amoimis. The lasUianied came in a Hash, and in an exciting finish went on to win by three lengths. ' The time, 1.36-L is a raco record, and equals the Australian and New Zealand records for the distance. Munro says Amoimis won in a canter. In the Spring Stakes, Piastoon made most of the running, with Star Stranger and Windbag in close attendance. Rapine was last, with Spearfelt just ahead of him. Coming into the straight- Windhag looked a certain winner, but left his run too late, and Spearfelt came up uu the rails and won by half a length. Rumnymede refused to leave the post in the Squatters' Handicap, and neither Count Cavour or Imperial Spark were ever prominent. Boonala led most ol the way. Following arc the results:— Hurdles: Willanjie 9.10 1, Knighthood 9.0 2, Grey Knight 9.6 3. Eight started including Bright Light. Loophead led early, but Knighthood ran to the front entering the back, and maintained the lead till the last hurdle, which he struck. Willanjie came up on the inside and won by three-quarters of a length. Time 3.43. Trial Stakes : Coolgong (MeCarten) 8.7 1. Larkspur (Bartle) 8.10 2, Reonui (Davidson) 7.9 3. Nine started, including Battlement. Reonui and Battlement were the first away on the inside, and hung together till going along the back, when Battlement fell back and Avron ran into second place. Reonui led into the straight, followed by Avron, Larkspur and Coolgong. In a close finish McCartt<ii brought his mount along to win bv a neck, Reonui being half a length behind Larkspur. Time 2.6 L A.J.C Derby: Rampion (Cracknell) 8.10 1. Limerick (MeCarten) 8.10 2, Baron (Wilson) 8.10 3. Also started: Amusement, King Val, Valaisan, and Royal Tea. Rampion jumped off from the barrier, closely followed by Limerick and Rnroin. That order was maintained passing the stand the first time. Royal Tea was the last out of the straight. Rampion held the lead till the six furlongs post, when he dropped back to third, but came on again entering the straight and in a desperate finish passed the post with a length and a-half to spam Baron was six lengths away third. Time 2.33. Epsom Handicap: Amoimis (Munro) 8.11 1, Fujisan (Pike) 9.9 2, Aorangi (Davidson) 7.12 3. All V the eighteen acceptors started. Fujisan took the lead from the start, and was three lengths in front of Aorangi. with Amounis third. Fujisan maintained the lead into the straight, where Amounis went up quickly and was never challenged, winning by three lengths, with three-quarters of n length between second and third. Time 1.36 L Spring Stakes: Spearfelt (Young) 1, Windbag (Munro) 2. Pantheon (Cracknell) and Valamite (Adams) dead heat 3. Also started : Rapine, Star Stranger, and Piastoon. PiastAon led from the barrier, followed by Windbag, with Rapine last! This order was maintained till entering the straight. A furlong from home Windbag looked like a winner, but Spearfelt came up on the rails and won by a length and a-half. Time 2.34. Squatters' Handicap: Boonala. 7.2 1. Brigadier Bob 7.4 2. Kalloni -6.12 3. Twenty started", including Count Cavour, Imperial Spark, and Runnymede, who refused to leave the post. Boonala lead nearly all the way and won by a length and a-half. Tima 2.44. METROPOLITAN HANDICAP. RAPINE SCRATCHED. SYDNEY, Oct. 3.' Rapine has been scratched for the Metropolitan Handicap.
