WAIROA NOTES

(Special to tho Herald.) WAIROA, tins day. A light drizzling raiu commenced to fall early on Friday morning, increasing during the day. Though, somewhat light along the coast it: appears that the back-blocks have had a heavier fall. It is specially welcome just now, tire soil .surface being somewhat dry. The public meeting called for Friday to meet Mr. Marshall, the business agont-'of the Railway Department, did not eventuate. The importers and Exporters Association was conspicuous by its absence, the only persons attending being tho acting-secretary, Mr. R. Mclnlyrc, Mr. W. Taylor, secretary of the harbor board, and the press representatives. .Mr. Marshall had proposed to deal with the question, of the railway freights between Wairoa and Waikokopu. The meeting - has been postponed, but it was understood that Mr. Marshall would see some of tho chief business men before he leaves. The first of tho supplementary series of socials in connection with St. Joseph's Convent school drew a good attendance. The card game prizes were won as follows:—Ladies, Mrs Barney Brown, 1; Mrs B. Duley, L'; men, Mr, B. Dulcy, .1; Mr. A. Waldron, o At Frastertown on Thursday night, Mr. A. Perry's concert party gave the people a musical treat in aid of the Fraserlown Presbyterian Church funds. The Rev. Sir. Milne, Wairoa, presided, and at the close the visitors were entertained at supper. Mrs CaiTipagnolo, of Mohaka, and late of Dannovirke, has had to seek medical treatment at the Wairoa hospital. Messrs. Hi M. Campbell, and W. 1). Lysnar, M.s'P., the Hon. A. T. Ngata, M.P., Sir .Tames Carroll, M.L.C, and Lady Carroll, are to be invited to 'the gathering of pioneers on November .1. Mr. C. Dunlop has been appointed district inspector for tike Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. "Lofty" Lewis, the 'X.Z. heavyweight champion, is now desirous of entering the ranks of the'professionals, and the local Boxing- Association is asking Mr. Young, of Wanganui, among others, to match him with a suitable heavyweight in a 10-round fight. The last meeting of the association disclosed a. loss of over £LS on tike July tournament. A well-attended children's fancy dress ball at; the L.D.S. Hall, Nuhakn, resulted successfully, Hie proceeds being in aid of the local board school funds. There were many striking fancy costumes, and many of them most original, and the prizo list was a very lengthy one.
