HAWKE'S BAY B BEATEN WIN FOR HOROWHENUA (Per Press Association.) LEVIN, last night. The Hawke's Bay B learn played Horowhcnua yesterday on a greasy ground, the result, after a hard light, being a win for Horowhcnua by S to ii. Deadly tackling by the Bay kept the Horowhcnua score down, the home team doing most of the attacking. The Horowhcnua backs were inclined to kick too much and the forwards I did not show their usual combination. Tana and Mitii scored tries for the winners, Jacob converting one, and Edwards kicked an easy penalty goal for Hawke's Bay. The match ends the "rep" programme, leaving both Horowhcnua and Horowhenua-Manawatu undefeated this season. WIN FOR HAWKE '8 BAY WELLINGTON DEFEATED (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Neither side was at full strength, some of tha best players on each side being absent. The game- resulted in a victory for Hawke's Bay by 11 points to 3. For the victors "Cooke and Grenside (2) scored tries and Chesney converted one. Malcolm kicked a penalty goal for Wellington. SATURDAY'S LOCAL MATCHES. BRIGADE BEAT TIMES. The .only Rugby match played on the Oval on Saturday was a friendly engagement between fifteens representing respectively the Fire Brigade and the I staff of the Gisborne Times. Both organisations were able to command a considerable amount of talent, and the match provided a highly interesting disI play. A good number of regular [players were engaged, and these naturally stood head and shoulders over their team-mates, but one, or two surprises were produced by the veterans of either side. The brigade won by 12 points to 6. The winners had a big advantage of weight in the serum, and this enabled them to secure, possession on most occasions, though their opponents en-, joyed a good margin of superiority in the brie-outs. The Times fifteen had the greater pace, both in the forward division and the backs, but when their heavier oponents got moving they found great difficulty in stopping. Tha brigade pulled off one very tine score, the vrholje of the back division {participating in a passing rush, but for the most part the teams lacked combination, and 1 earned their points by hard following up of short, kicks. The Times opened the scoring with a penalty kick from outside the twentyfive linel and the brigade equalised with a good try by 'Swan, which went unconverted. Thomson put the firefighters in the lead with a fine run from .midfield, but once again the score was squared, Sutton running in under a penalty kick and beating the brigadesmen for the ball in a scramble over that goal-line. Then came the splendid passing rush that pub the brigade over again, and later Smale got a try by a solo run, after Sutcliffe had gained a lot of ground by a short dash, followed by a long kick. For the "winners, Smale and Weston were prominent forwards, and 1 Swan and Sutcliffe. among the backs, gave their opponents a lot of trouble. Forster made a good showing at full-buck, and stemmed somo likely runs on the part of the Times team; his handling from the ground was excellent, and he played his position well. Robertson was .the best of the losing team's forwards, but Sutton gave, him good support, and when Robertson suffered a hand injury that enforced his retirement to the fullback position, one or two of the others came into prominence. Fromm, at half, did much to stop the rushes of the opposition, and made serine spirited bids when nea.r the line. 'Lowndes, though very light compared with the men he was called! on. to stop, played a rattling good gaine. and' was- really the most effective of the Times backs. Mr. M. J. Kyne was the referee, and kept the game going well.
