Danao was expected tn show pp at the Avondale meeting, but failed to get into the money. Tn the Cup she was prominent for a long way, but could not see it out. -X- * * * Ti-tree, a filly by Tea Tray—Talamni. ran well in the Nursery Handicap at the Avondale mooting on Monday, finishing third. She is a fine-grown youngster., and appears as though she will be on the winning list before long. Site is owned by Mr. O. 0. Alaeindoe. * :<■ Trainer ('. Morse returned to Gisborne with Cohesion during the week. He stated that, as a result of a bad trip through the Bay of Plenty, on the way to Auckland, the gelding was out of sorts when lie lauded at Auckland, and lie would not come right. It was a disappointing business, for, prior to leaving for tin* Avondale meeting Cohesion had done some good trials. The barrier failed to work properly in the last race at Fllerslie on Monday, and one side of ir did not go up when released. *ln consequence, A. MeCormac, rider of Quincoma, was dragged from his mount and lost some of his teeth. An inquiry was held, and it was found that the battier had worked all right when tested before and after the race .and its failure to act when the horses were lined tip was inexplicable. * -*■ * * Air. W. 11.I 1 . Hazlett. of Invercargill, owner of Beacon Bight and Gold Light (both Avondale Cup winners), is also well-known as the owner of Razzle Dazzle, Father o’Flynn, and other good horses, including Frenchman, who performed well over country at the last Grand National meeting. Mr. Hazlett is president of the Southland Racing Club, and a member of the New Zealand Racing Conference. * * * # The. following were the principal winning payments in connection with the, Avondale meeting:—W. Buristar, whoso death at the Ohild--0 wickburv Stud. St. Albans, was reported in the latest English mail, was a bred in JOliS by Mr. .1. P». Joel. Bv B Absurd’s sire. Sundridge, out of Doris, a )i(i ran six times as a two-year-old, winning three of his races, including ®the International 'Two-Year-Old Plate 11 at .Kempton, Park, and the next season was unbeaten, winning the Two * Thousand ftuineas and the Derby, tff j Unfortunately the roll broke down -|during his preparation for the St. j Legor. Sunstar was retired to the «j stud in BUk’ iif n fee of *IOO guineas aj’nnd sired several good winners, including Sunny Jane, who won the « “Substitute”' Oaks in PJI7, Buchan B : (twice winner of the Eclipse Stakes), I Galloper Light (winner of the Grand ,® Prix), Salt ash (winner of the Eclipse a kfetkes), Craig an Eran (winner of I ! the Two Thousand Guineas and I Eclipse Stakes), Alan Brock, and 8 Zambo. # j sl A special meeting of the Auckland • Racing Club committee was held on a Tuesday, when the petition from the 3 members ot the club asking for iacilil® ties for purchasing 10/- tickets on the totalisator at Ellorslie was further considered. The question proved quite a difficult one to settle from many points of view, especially in regard to the probable effect on the club’s revenue. a reduction in which would also mean a similar reduction in prize money for owners, necessary accommodation for public, etc. Inquiries from many leading clubs lea cl to the opinion that the installation of 10/- investments on the lawn at Ellorslie would prove to act adversely on the club s revenue, and, in fact., a good number of clubs do not provide 10/- totalizators on any part of their racecourses. After very’full consideration it was decided to meet the petitioners ’ wishes and give them the necessary facilities for investing on the totalisator in 10/tiekets and also allow the general patrons of the lawn the privilege of patronising the 10/- totalisator on the hill, by the institution of a system of passes" between the two enclosures. This is certainly, a step towards the fulfilment of a long-felt want, and it is to be hoped that instead of reducing revenue it will increase it. Anyhow. a trial of the system will soon demonstrate the wisdom or otherwise of the innovation. UNDER A CLOUD. A FORTUNE AT STAKE. MELBOURNE. Sept. 23. Heroic, who has been backed for a fortune for the Melbourne Cup, and was second favorite to Limerick, is under a cloud. With Hugh Cairns in the saddle, he galloped five furlongs with Metellus ot Mentone this morning, and pulled it]' in a condition which, it is understood, gave concern to those associated with him. 11 was not possible to get a statement from J. Holt, Heroic’s trainer, and the owner, Mr. C. B. Kellow, Ims been ori n world tour, and is on his way back to Australia. From information gathered from other sources, it appears that Heroic’s condition will not permit of him starting at Mooneo Valley on Saturday. | How far the trouble will affect his | Cup prospects could not be determined to-day. j Heroic, is under engagement to meet Manfred and other prominent Spring candidates in the Quality Handicap at

M\jon oo Valley cm Saturday, whi another of is the Oetobi Stakes at Flemiiigton a week late .Tlieii, of eourse, there is his Melhoun Cup engagement. IJKAYJLY HACKED IN DOGBEES In view of the uncertainly regan ing thi v extent of Heroic’s ineapaeil. racing men should wait for some mot definite decision regarding his eond tion than it was possible to ascertai to-day. Heroic’s attendant stated this allot n noon that, in his opinion, the injur; o which caused the horse’s lameness thi t. morning was not of a very soriou nature.
