WAIROA’S JUBILEE

.MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. A meeting of the committee to fitly celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the county of Wairoa was held in the County Council chambers on Tuesday night. There were present: Messrs. A. H’. Nolan, county chairman, the Mayor, M. J. Corkill, Mr. B. G. Signall, and Mr. T. Lambert. The chairman, welcoming, the Mayor, Said he was glad he had come along to help in marking in some way the jubilee of the county. He understood the borough people desired to combine it with the institution of a “ Brighter Waivoa Week,” and he saw no reason why it should not Work. As far as the! county was concerned, he did not think they could spend a. great deal, and what they did: spend might need Government authorisation. There were the two ways in which they could spend, namely, by helping the newspapers circulating in the district to get up jubilee issues, and by entertaining the pioneers of the county and: borough in some ivay. Mr. Corkill said! he did not think even the country people would be miserable if the council did spend some of their rates to help brighten up the outlook. The clay would never come again in the case of those present. A general discussion then took place, when the following resolution was carried : “That the county share of the celebration of the jubilee of the granting of local government to Wairoa take the fonn of assisting the press to obtain the needed information, and to entertain the pioneers at a- dinner from 5 to 7 p.m., and at 7.30 to take part in a reunion at the Gaiety Theatre.” The Mayor undertook to endeavor to secure suitable items for that evening Ho intersperse with tho speeches pf pioneers. It was decided to formally ask the Borough Council to join in with the County Council in, celebrating tho fiftieth anniversary of county government. It was decided that the chairman invito the pioneer settlers, possessing a--40-years or over qualification, to send in as soon as possible their names and addresses to the office of the local paper for publication, stating date of their residence or birth. On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by the county chairman, it was decided to send a, special invitation to Sir James and Lady Carroll, and to ask the former to nominate the native pioneers he Would: like to be present. The county chairman and the Mayor were asked to take the necessary steps to proclaim a public holiday on .November 1, from 11 a.m. Mr. Lambert urged that this he done early, so that people could arrange their work aceordingly. On Mr. Corkill’s suggestion it was decided that the children attending all the town and 1 country schools be asked, through tho several committees, to assemble on the new sports ground, on which occasion a massed) photograph would 1 bo arranged for. Mr. 'Signall stressed tho importance of getting all the children into the celebrations, and also to enlist tho support of,other bodios and institutions. The chairman moved, and Mr. Govkill seconded : “ That all the other local bodies in the district, sporting and other institutions, be asked to send 1 two delegates to a- meeting to be held in the County Council chambers on Tuesday, October 5, to form sub-committees to organise the function. It was understood that Mr. Henry Mill, tho member for the district, and others would! be invited, but this work was left- to the sub-committees. . The chairman, Mr. Corkill and Mr. Signall were appointed to select a suitable menu form‘for tJe pioneers’ dinner, tOi be kept as a memehto of the occijfion.
