PROBATION PERIOD
PUBLIC SERVICE PROBLEM EXTENSION SUGGESTED (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. " Many young fellows start their work in life in a line that is not suited to them. If they remain in it they will be failures for life, but if they pass out of it early in life they will probably get into something else which will suit them, and perhaps be successful,'' remarks the Public Service Commissioner, in announcing that the probationary period for entrants to the Public Service is being extended. " All new appointees are admitted to the service subject to a period of probation. Tho Act provides that the period is not to be less than six months. In 1921. Departments were advised that the period would be extended to not less than two years.
" Experience lias shown the wisdom of the extension, particularly in cases of new entrants for oadetship. It i.s felt that the period should be further extended in this latter case, and a period of foiir years substituted for two years. This would give an added opportunity, both for departments and new entrants, to ensure that the career in the Publie Service will be a successful one."
