AUCKLAND'S PORT

FACILITIES COMPARED BETTER THAN SYDNEY BOARD CHAIRMAN ON T^UE (Special to the Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. " J will give Sydney credit for having a better harbor than the Waitemata, hut the equipment and facilities are in no way to lie compared with ours," slated Mr. H. P. Mackenzie, chairman of the Auckland Harbor Board, who retained by tlu Ulimaroa. Mr. Mackenzie stated that he had thoroughly inspected Sydney harbor, and was-quite, satisfied that the attitude adopted by the Auckland Harbor Board in regard to concrete wharves was a correct one. The Sydney authorities were still building wharves in wood.

" \Tc allow 10 per cent annual depreciation on wooden wharves, and L} per cent on ferro-ce.nerote wharves." Mr. Mackenzie said. " The concrete wharves cost- no more to build. The adoption of concrete wharves here has created much interest in Sydney, and it is quite probable that Sydney will send two commissioners ever here to inspect oar wharves." Mr. .Mackenzie said that much more money was spent in equipment in Auckland than in Sydney. Many of the Sydney wharves had no cranes, for instance. Mr. Mackenzie also visited Brisbane, and he said he was full of admiration for the work of Mr. Calico, the engineer, who had' turned the river into a Rood port. Mr. Oullen, who was commissioned to advise on the Xnpicr harbor scheme, was the ablest engineer Mr. Mackenzie had met.
