OPENING OP SESSION.

A LIGHT CALENDAR

The quart oily session of the Supremo Court was opened before His Honor the Chief Justice, Mr. Skerrett, this morning. The calendar tor -the session is an unusually light one, and there Is every prospect of the session ending to-mor-row. It is understood that the most important of the civil actions will be adjourned. Addressing the jury. His Honor said he was plascd to be able to congratulate the district on the lightness of the calendar. There were only two cases for their consideration—both against members of the Maori race. The first charge, onrt of rape, hail no unusual circumstances and should present no difficulty to the jury. The second charge was' one of assault and robbery. As the charge indicated it was alleged that there had.'bcen .assault at the time of the crime. The jury, he thought, would liave no difficulty.in finding that the offence had been committed, and the question would, be whether or not there was'"-sufficient- evidence to put the.a'e r cused on trial.
