PREFERRED GAOL.
ESCAPED FROM THE “ISLAND.”
THREE. MONTHS’ GACL.
A man named David Bole, alias John Fry, who bad escaped from the inebriates’ home on Rotoroa Island, was arrested in Gisborne yesterday, and appeared before Mr. E. C. Levvev, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Sen.-Sergt. Fitzpatrick stated that the accused had been arrested for drunkenness yesterday, and it was then ascertained that he bad escaped from the “ island.” lie had served his time on the ”, island ’’ before, but in April last had boon sent, back again. Nineteen days later he escaped in a dinghy, rowing some fifteen miles to the mainland. He bad then come on to Gisborne, and taken to drink again. It seemed that as soon as he got out of the home ho went for the drink, and he said he would prefer gaol to the “ island.” The .accused said it was no good sending him to the “ island,” as he would not stop there. He had already served one term and that was enough. The Magistrate sentenced the accused to three months’ gaol, to be followed by his return to tfie .island.
