SOLD BEER TO POLICE.

WOMAN FINED £2O. (Fer Press Association.! AUCKLAND, last night. For selling five bottles of beer to a constable in plain clothes, without being duly licensed to sell liquor, Gertrude Mary Woolley came before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning. Accused, who pleaded guilty, was represented by Mr. R. S. Burt. The facts as disclosed by Sub-Inspec-tor Lewin, were that Miss Woolley had conducted a confectionery shop at Devonport during the past two months. Certain information came into the hands of the police, with the result that Constable Floury visited her shop and ■bought five- pint bottles of pale ale at Is each. The premises were searched and a quantity of liquor found. Mr. Burt stated that his client had been most unfortunate. Some few months ago she purchased the goodwill of a business and placed all her savings and some borrowed money into it. Recently the premises were condemned and were to he demolished. As business had been bad, a friend advised her to sell beer, and in sheer desperation, 'defendant took this course.
