Leave of absence was granted at the Harbor Board meeting to Mr. B. Cram.

Mrs. Samson, of Kopu road, has gone on a holiday to Wellington. Messrs. George Britncll and dames Aliddlcton Taylor have been re-nom-inated by the Government as members of the Wairoa Harbor Board for a further term of three years.

Nurse Pearson, who contracted illness in the course of her duties, lias been granted further sick leave by the Hospital Board. Sister Williams, of the Wairoa Hospital, litis been appointed to tlie position held by Bister Dickens, and Bister At core has taken the place, of Bister Simpson. Mr. it. G. Dickie, M.P. for Pa tea, who has been staying with his nephew, Afr. B. A. Dickie, of Lahore street, for some days, has returned home. From time to time at public gatherings iof farmers complaints are made at the high cost of lime, especially when high freight lias to be added, It would seem to a layman that the solution of the difficulty is to use up our own deposits in this district, well situated in most cases,-and one of the best close to the AVaikokopu railway. These deposits contain about Bfi per cent, of agricultural lime, and with the advent of electricity (in burning, and not merely crushing is needed) it should be possible to put this lime- on llio local market at all events at a price that would enable the farmers to use it extensively, Southland farmers get lime, I understand, at 12s fid per ton, whilst in Hawke’s Bay it. is close on £4, and in Wairoa probably £o. This is surely a big handicap 1 ? Dr. liallwright and Mr. H. E. Stanton waited on the Harbor Board on behalf of the School Committee to ask for Assistance in the matter of paying the salary of a part-time teacher of commercial subjects at the district high, school. Members were sympathetic and on the motion of Mr. Carroll a vote of £lO was passed. The following returns were tabled at the Harbor Board meeting (19155 figures being given in parentheses):— Wairoa- —Wharfages, £2O ISs fid (TtOfi 10s); Wuikokopu —£101 18s 4d (£73 ,18s Id). Wairoa—port charges, £fi 3s .'ld (£3O 1 Is JOd); AVaikokopu--£Bl 7s 2d (£l3 JOs). Exports —Wairoa, wool, three bales (413 bales), mutton and lamb, nil; AVaikokopu, Wool 731 bales (73), Jamb and mutton carcases 15,400 (.11,177), beef 48 quarters (100-1 quiux ■tors). Wairoa— arrivals and departures, eight vessels (JO); Wuikokopu—--22 vessels (1(5).

The Kurnalpi Ims landed at Waikokopu the first consignment of girders for the railway bridge over the Wairnn, river at Turiroa.

The Wairoa police are now busy delivering the. census papers to houses 'holders throughout the county. The Maori census papers also arc being delivered. The Putore school picnic avus held, in good weather amid beautiful surroundings. The pupils had a good day’s outing. Miss Burl, (formerly of Hastings school) was the moving spirit in the day’s proceedings. The County Council lias put forward loan proposals totalling £EI,(iUU, the major portion being l’or the main liigliwav.

Mr. and Mrs. Ellison, of Napier, are visiting Wairoa. Mr. D. Graham, of Huntly, is visiting Waikarenioana and Wairoa. ' Mr. and Mrs. Hook (Havelock North), formerly Wuiroaites, arc revisiting the district. Mr. G. 0. Ormond has been elected patron of the Muhin Football Club and Mr. G. E. Ormond is president. ai— '»'■»
