DIPHTHERIA PREVALENT.
23 CASES IN HOSPITAL,
WARNING TO PARENTS
There are 23 cases of diphtheria in the Cook Hospital at tlie present time, the number having increased considerably during the past four days, and a warning is issued to the public to exercise every possible care.
The matter was brought before the meeting of the Hospital Board yesterday by Mr. 11. 11. DeOosta, who referred to the fact that there were 23 cases of diphtheria in the institution, and said that the matter was so serious that the public should know that overy precaution was necessary. Children with sore throats should receive early attention, and parents should he advised not to neglect .the matter. Up to tho present the eases were well distributed throughout the district, the majority coming from the country,
The chairman, Mr. W r . G. Sherratt, said it was rather a big question. The disease could be carried by unaffected persons, and for this reason it was difficult to control.
Mr. D. AY. Golem.pi agreed that some note of warning should he sounded, so that people would not hesitate to'secure medical attention. The chairman said that the host and only effective plan would fie for the Health Department to examine tho. children in all the schools. Mr. O. H. Bridge Hpitl lie thought the public should know that- the ambulance was always available. He instanced one case at Pulia the previous evening, when a man had tried all round the district, to get a car to take ill's child to hospital. Air. Bridge said Hint when he-was communicated with he rang up for the ambulance, and it was there Within an hour and a-half.
The chairman said the ambulance was available, for anyone, anywhere, at any time. In cases of emergency it was not necessary to get an order for admission from a doctor.
