Nelson’s new general hospital, a fine, up-to-date institution, will be opened tomorrow. It cost £75,000; and is a fine institution. To meet the cost there is £I6OOO from the Cu villi ron estate, which, with tlie Government subsidy, makes £30,000. The remaining £45,800 i.s equally divided between the local rates and Government subsidy, so the Government in nil 'finds, half tiie cost-, £37,u00. An Invercargill resident who recently Returned from a visit to the Lakes Djstiiet told a News reporter that tlie Kawnrau dam was now taking shape, all tiie main piers and floodgates being in place. Alen are. working at high pressure, taking advantage of the fact that tlie lake is at present very low. The simplicity of handling tlie flood gates is exemplified by the fact that a nine-ton gate can bo handled by one man, which is due to counter-balancing and 1 reduction gearing. Only two move floodgates have to be installed.'
