CITY OF TERROR.
HELD UP BY MAD SNIPER. NEW YORK, Feb. 22. The entire population of Omaha, Nebraska, a city of 200,000 inhabitants, has been living for the. past week in terror of a. mad. sniper, who, with a. silent pistol, had killed two people, mortally wounded another, and sent bullets crashing through illuminated windows. Business is disrupted, streets and theatre are deserted and churches are neglected because people l'cnrl'uly keep to their closely-shuttered house's. Ono of the leading shops of the city has withdrawn all newspaper advertising, explaining that sales have practically ceased, and even tramcars are without passengers. The only evidence left by the killer. is empty cartridge cases, which the police declare were all fired from the same weapon, Tim attacks evidently are without motive other than an insane desire to kill, and Urn deadly accuracy of the sniper is attested by the fact Hud. lie has never missed his man. Ross Johnson, who was mortally wounded, was tlio only pel'son to see the madman and live to describe his mysterious assailant. MYSTERIOUS SNIPER ARRESTED. OMAHA, Feb. 23. The World Herald is informed that a Ilian arrested in lowa, has admitted I bat he was the mysterious person who lirod the shots which killed two men and seri. ously Wounded several others in this city last week. The ’ prisoner carried a .22 calibre revolver, and explained that he killed thu physician owing to a grudge, and a man, Mr. William McDevitt, With the intention, of robbing him, but that lie was frightened off by approaching pedestrians. He gave as bis reason for shooting at Mr. Ross Johnson, a railway detective, whom lie only succeeded in wounding, his fear of being arrested by detectives. The prisoner gave his name as Carter, and said he worked on a farm in summertime, hut lie never made enough money to tide him over the winter. The result was that he started to rob in Omaha, and decided to let no vLtim get away to tefll Hie story. That was why lie shot and killed-two persons.
