NEW YORK, Jan. 29. The United States and Canada arc shivering under a wave of extreme cold, and terrific winds, which reached a velocity of 84 miles an hour. Suffering is increased 1 in some localities by the shortage of coal, duel to t.hc strike. The police arc sheltering the homeless. Only parts of the south escaped (lie zero weather. The following temperatures were recorded : Montreal, 11 degrees below zero; Winnipeg, 19 below; Port Arthur, 28 below; New York, zero; Philadelphia six above; Northville (Vermont), 16. Twenty deaths are already reported, mostly from fires duo to overheating and several from exposure. One was through the explosion of an over-heated furnace.
Tlie Argentine, in the meantime, is suffering a heat wave.
