GOOD BUTTER.
A TRIBUTE FROM STOKE POGES. During his rec-ent visit to England Mv W. T. Grundy, of Masterton, until }? recently a member of the \\ ellington Education Board, visited Stoke Poges, where, as is the custom, lie paid a visit to the grave- of Thomas Gray, the author of the Famous “Elegy." Whilst there the vicar of Stoke Poges was exceedingly kind and obliging to the Visitor, ‘and showed him many places of historical interest-. When he heard that -Mr Grundy was from New Zealand he said that lie had something that he must tell them, as it had claimed his attention. One of Ids parishioners, ■who was about to leave the district, had been in receipt of liuttcr from a certain stove iu the town with which he had beer, satisfied. Indeed, one of llis regrets on leaving l lie place was that he might not be aide to get the butter lie had become used in. He told the Stoke Poges ‘storekeeper this, and much to • his"surprise the man assured him that he would lie able to buy the. same butter almost anywhere: he only had to ask for and insist, on getting New Zealand butter. When in Birmingham Mr Grundy was passing-along the Bristol road one day when ho saw a special display of butter in a corner grocery. lie was so much struck bv the get-up. textlu'c, and color ■ of this butter that lie went- inside to make inquiry. “isn’t that Nmv Zealand butter in vour window?’ lie asked ' the shopkeeper. “It is.” said the nian, “and very good butter it is.” “If that- is the case, don't you think you ought, to label it as coming from New Zealand?” Mr Grundy said. “All yon have on il is ‘Co-operative butter.’ That does not tell your people where sucli good hulter comes from.” “No, thnf is so. But this is the ‘Cooperative Store,' and vve want to build up a name for good butter. It’s all in the way of business.” “Well, I'm an Englishman,” returned Mr Grundy, “and I think that you ought to give some credit to the country of origin. 5 * so that people may know where the good stuff comes from.’
