WAIKATO RIVER TRADE.
development of shipping. NEW TUG TO BE BUILT. HAMILTON. Saturday. Tho development of the transport trade on the Waikato River by the Boose Shipping Company, is leading to a. considerable enlargement of the company’s fleet. Following the commissioning.’ a few days ago, of the big new stern-wheeler Rawliiti, tho assembling of a new tug. specially constructed in England for "the firm,’is to he started at Mercer in a couple of months. This vessel will he 68ft. long, with a. draught of only 2ft 6in. and is to he fitted with triple screws driven by powerful engines. The tug will he capable of towing six fully-laden barges, .each carrying 50 tons, at a good pace against the stream. The' company also hopes to build at an early date, another iron barge to carry a floating crane, for use on any part of the navigable stretch of (he river. Tho obsolete stern-wheel steamer Freetrader is to be dismantled and used as a cargo barge. The paddle steamer Mnnuwni is being overhauled and repainted in readiness for the summer excursion season on the river.
