CAR OVER BANK.
ACCIDENT IN W AIM AN A GORGE.
Mr. F. E- ITawkesby had a narrow escape from death in tho Wairnana Gorge When his car wont over the bank and plunged into the Wuiniana river, reports tiie Whakutane Press. 1 lie causfl of the accident is obscure, but Mr. HawkeSby believed that he struck a boulder’on thu road, causing the ear to swerve and somersault into tho river several feet below. No trace of the ear can now he seen, it evidently haling sunk to the bed of the river, which is over 20 feet deep at (his point. Constable Clist found Air. Ilawkesby climbing uu the hank from tho river. Mr. ITa wkesby was in a state of collapse, suffering from immersion and Irom a blow on the side of the head. He was driven; to the Whakatane Hospital, where ho is now recovering.
