BALDWIN SURROUNDED BY INTRIGUES.

LLOYD GEORGE COALITION TO FIGHT SOCIALISTS. LONDON, Sept. 21,—Former Prime Minister David Lloyd George's censational return to politics with the scheme for land nationalisation which he launched this week, is the political sensation of Great Britain, and has , complicated the already obscure political situation. Rumors, of an early election are growing in intensity and the intrigue against Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin inside the Tory party is gain : ing in strength, Mr Baldwin by his honesty and independence has offended many career-seekers and intriguers, and also many honest Conservatives feel thnj> he is too casual and pasy.going to ; be entrusted with the helm of the ship of State in times so troublesome as at present. Much is being made of his remark on his return from his holiday this week , that he had not seen a newspaper for a month. This is felt hy many of his "■ followers ns unpardonable levity. COALITION FAVORED. A growing section ol‘ the party is said to be rallying to the plan urged by the press barons, Lord BeaVerbrook and Lord Rothermore, to form a' coalition under former Prime Minister David Lloyd George’s leadership to fight the Socialists. The basis for this is the fact that although the Liberal party in Parliament is reduced to about forty, they are still able to poll a large vote iu an election, which, added to the Conservative vote, ought to give the new party secure predomination for a generation. A weak point in this argument is the undoubted fact that probably as many Liberals will vote Socialist and Tory if there is a Liberal in the field. Another interesting possibility is ' based on the report that file Socialists are watching the land campaign closely with the idea, if it is a success, of inviting Mr Lloyd George to take command of the coalition of right wing Socialists and Liberals, overthrowing tho Communists and seeking the powers of constitutional reformers. , Mr Lloyd George himself lias not indicated his preference, although it is more likely that he would prefer a Tory alliance. On fhe other hand, he would probably accept a Socialist alliance if a Tory alliance was not available, if the w .Socialist party was purged of the revolutionary elements.
