TWO NEW VOLCANOES

AUCTURUS EXPEDITION

NKW YORK, April 22.—The steamer Avcturus, 'now voyaging wider' the auspices of the New York Zoological Society, after remaining without communication for two weeks; has been able •at last to pierce Ihe great Equatorial blanket of static which smothers wireless most of the time in, spring ami eummer in certain parts of the world. an<l now semis a message to the New York Times reporting the discovery of two new volcanoes in the Galapagos group of islands, and also the witnessing of a. magnificent double volcanic eruption on tlie night of April 10. ’1 he message describes the interesting phenomenon of the cold Humboldt current sweeping up from the West Coast of South America, and' before arriving at Darwin Hay the discovery ot the “gigantic tide-rip where the Panama and Humboldt currents meet," Great Inine foam, marked the junction of the two streams for a score of miles, and in-it wallowed’ great numbers of whales and porpoises. Amongst the interesting specimens was “a mackerel with blue and yellow lights, and also transparent flounders.” It is believed that never before have eruptions been actually seen in the Galapagos Islands, and it is suggested by Dr. William Beebe, - in charge ot the expedition, that there-may be some conned ion between these eruptions and the Japanese earthquakes and with the changes noted, in the Humboldt current.
