The difficulties confronting ships using tlu* port was referred to at the meeting of thff Harbor Board this afternoon by Mr. T. Corson, who referred to the lack of' berthage, and the lack of water on tlie town side. He had been, approached by representatives of the shipping companies and asked to bring tlie matter forward. — The chairman said the position would have been relieved if the dredge had not broken clown, the intentions being to berth all the Board’s own craft in the entrance to the diversion cut. It was decided to refer the matter to the advisory committee, and to ask the shipping companies to put their requirements in writing. Mr Tyndall, engineer of tlie Main Highways Board, is at present in Gisborne, prior to proceeding to lauranga to attend a conference of Bay of Plenty engineers, at which matters in connection with road maintenance will he discussed. Speaking on the work of the Board this afternoon, Mr Tyndall said that everything was now working smoothly, a definite system having gradually been evoked out of the chaos which existed at the commencement. One of the questions which would have to be faced sooner or later was that connected with the multiplicity of local bodies in the Dominion, and it appeared as if. in the long run some, of these would have to amalgamate, and thus provide for greater efficiency. Mr Tyndall referred in eulogistic terms to tlie. work which has been carried out locally on the main highways. It could not be said as yet that the" Board had fully justified its existence, but it had gone a long way towards doing so. Smith, who pointed out that the action was penalising the ratepayers generally. The- request had never come before the Board, but a statement had been published and this reflected upon the Board.—The chairman said he had conferred with the engineer, who had said all the gravel was required by the Board. —Mr. T. Corson said that the Board desired the road put in good order, and ho thought the Council should he allowed to take gravel f6r it, but not. for other roads. —Mr. Mirfield took exception to the manner in which the request, had been •made. by the Borough Council—The engineer said the. policy Of the Board had been to consume the shingle for its own use, and instructions to this effect had been given. The Board would have to pay for the replacement of any shingle taken, and the amount, available was not nearly sufficient for their requirements. —-It was resolved that the matter should ho loft in the hands of the chairman.
