EAST COAST ROAD.

METALLING TO WHANGARA

PLANS FOR, NEXT YEAR

The excellent weather experienced during recent weeks has allowed good progress to ho made with the metalling of rho I'last, (.’oast road, and the metalling of the road as far as Whangara will he completed by the end of next week. „ When that is done, the programme orginally outlined for this season will have been completed. The completion of the metalling a& lar north as Whangara reflects great, credit upon die local resident engineer, Mr (). W. Albertson, who has done everything possiblo to hurry on operations. Owing to tho extremely wet weather m January and February, six weeks’ time was lost and if, was then considered impossible to complete before the winter. More lor ries were put on, however, and the work hurried along. Tho principal difficulty experienced of late has been that of obtaining sufficient, supplies of stone from Whangara island. and as fast as the stone is obtained by tho contractor, it is placed on the road. To-day there are hut 20 chains of the metalling to be completed, andi this stretch will he finished by the end of next week.

A very ambitious programme of metalling will he undertaken next year, and it is hoped, to complete the work as far north as Tnlaga- Ihiy. This will necessitate 15 miles of metalling, but it is believed that, although it may not he possible to surface off the whole of tho road, the main metal can he laid! down.
