SEVERE EARTHQUAKE.

TREMORS IN NEW YORK. EARTH MOVEMENT GENERAL. (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.! (Received March 2, 9 a.m.) NEW YORK, March 1. An earthquake shock broke the needle of,the seismograph at Fordham Univer sity here to-night. It is said to be the worst 'quake occurring in the vicinity in recent times. , Tremors 'were felt in every part of the city and its environs. The duration of the shock was four minutes. Reports show that the earth movement was general along the Atlantic Coast, being felt as far west as Chicago, and south as Louisville and Richmond. The Georgetown Observatory at Washington reports that the shock was very severe, having its centre at Boston. The onjy damage reported was at Conford, New Hampshire, where furniture and crockery were broken and people thrown out of bed. (Reuter’s Telegram.) (Received March 2, ]() a.m.) NEW YORK, March 1. A dispatch from New Haven says: “Earth tremors felt last night arc undoubtedly due to a gradual sinking of the New England coast,” according to Professor Alan Bateman, a Yale geologist. It is not likely they will ever reach tho intensity of those felt on the Pacific Coast.
