OCEAN RACE FOR YACHTS.
PROVES A FIASCO.
(Per Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day,
The annual ocean race for yachts from Wellington to Port Underwood proved a fiasco, owing to lack of wind, and calms which prevailed over the week-end. I Seven yachts started, but all were beI calmed off the Heads, and two returned to port. The others drifted all through Saturday night, and only three managed to reach their destination on Sunday afternoon, Wanderer being first, an hour before Wairere 1., and an hour and a half before Mann. The return journey was nmdo under similar conditions, in dead calms, until nearing the Heads, when a strong northerly sprang up, and brought the three boats into port. Wanderer arrived at the finishing line at 2.55 this morning, and Mana at 6.11. Wairere arrived (between 6 and half-past. The handicaps have not yet been declared. The proceedings are somewhat irregular, as the mark boat at Port Ufidervvood had left when the boats arrived there.
