COMPLAINT BY SETTLERS.

AN UNSATISFACTORY ROAD. A complaint regarding an unsatisfactory road was received'at to-day’s meeting of tlie Cook County Council. A letter signed by eight residents on the Totangi road drew attention to the very unsatisfactory state of the road. Last year £1750 had been spent on the road, hut it had not been blindeu, with the result that the surface was in a deplorable state. They i'eit, therefore. that their money had been wasted and that an injustice had been done them in that they had rated themselves for the improvement of their road. The chairman said' that the letter was pretty strong, and lie arid Cr. Matthews had therefore gone and looked at the road. It was a gross exaggeration 'of fact to say that the road, was in bad condition. The greater part of the road was in good order, but about 16 chains had lifted and looked as if it had not been rolled in. It was apparent that one man had gone round l amt got the others to sign, in the hope that they would get a little more than their right. The Council had only two rollers, and these could not he rushed on to little jobs like that at short notice. Or. Matthews said that the greater part of the road was in perfect order. The 16 chains that were rough were being attended to, and' the settlers had little to complain about. Cr. Barns-Graham : Don’t you think we should write them a pretty stiff letter.

Cr. Sherratt thought that the best plan would be to write and state that there was only a small section of bad road, and that was being attended to.

It was decided to write on the lines suggested by Cr. Sherratt.
