PREFERENTIAL TARIFF.

THE BASIS OF MATERIAL AND WORKMANSHIP. CAN ADIAN OBJECTIONS. tl'io Hies* Association.' WELLINGTON, this day. Representations of the Canadian Go vernment for the reduction from 75 per cent, lo 50 pe,r cent, of the basis of material and workmanship of British origin recently imposed by Australia and New Zea.and in manufactured imported • goods to qualify for the British preferential tariff,- svorv. discussed by the Minister of Customs, Industries, and Commerce, the Hon. W. D. Stewart, who set out the difficulties in the way of such a concession. "The Government agreed," said the .Minister, "lo give a trial to a. 7b per rent, proposal in view <if the great importance of maintaining a uniform practice both in Australia and in New Zealand, as otherwise exporters would lie pul lo grave inconvenience. Recently Hie Governn I has received representations from Canada with respect to the adoption of a £0 per cent. Lasts, and is at present communicating with the Governments of that country and Australia. It should, however, bo recognised that, in corning to a decision it is necessary lo view the matter from many angles. Consideration had to be given, among other things, lo the interests of our own manufacturers, and of those in other parts of the British Empire, and also to the difficulties which are created for exporters if each Dominion adopts an independent system involving different forms of certified invoices, with the consequent delay and inconveniences caused to importers in New Zealand and elsewhere, through the documents not being in order when the goods arrive."
