BACK-HANDED SWIPES AT A LOB

A Yorkshire cricket authority recalls an incident wherein it Yorkshire umpire gave out a lel't-httinled batsman for obstruction and unfair play in playing off a ball by turning round and hitting it right-handed. Ho states that .1. T. Brown, an old. test player, in a match between Yorkshire ami Notts in .190(1 attempted to hit one of Gunn's lobs with a back-hand stroke. The scoring book recorded: "Brown, bowled by Gunn," with the added comment: "Brown, lost his wicket by foolishly hitting backhanded at a lob."
