CAPTAIN COOK.

COUSINS IN AUSTRALIA. NO GREAT-GRANDDAUGHTER. BRISBANE, May 25.—The publishing of a cable message from London recently had unforscen results for it disclosed the fact that cousins of Captain Cook are residing at Coorparoo, Brisbane. The communication froj>i Loudon was as follows: “Mrs. Shoesmitlq -of Abingdon, a greatgranddaughter of Captain Cook; visited the Australian Pavilion at .Wembley. Slip showed special interest in a model of Captain Cook’s ship.” j This message came under the notice of Aliss Ethel Simonson,l“Goldstream.” Cleveland Road, Coorparoo, who . left England for Australia two years ago, and who, in a most interesting communication to the Brisbane Sunday Mail, states: “May I sav that Captain Cook had no children married, his children having all died. The eldest, who was following in his father’s footsteps, was drowned at sea, and the last one died at school, where a fever had broken out. “My mother is a third cousin of Captain Cook, and her maiden name was Cook. My mother’s great-grand-father and Captain Cook’s father were brothers. Captain Cook’s grandfather and my mother’s great-great-grand-father were one and the same man. “So that there can be no greatgranddaughter. My grandfather was 33 when Captain Cook’s widow died, so what my mother knows is from her own father. “There is a cottage at Marski-by-thc-sca for Captain Cook’s next-of-kin. Our last hpme was at Reilcar, which is about 24 miles from Alarski. We see so much printed about Captain Cook which is not true, so I felt, must write and say 1 don’t sec where the great-granddaughter can come in. “At Donum and Long’s Atiilillesbro ’ i Museum there are many things which belong to Captain Cook, given by his wife’s relations. Captain Cook’s widow was 93 when she died. Had my grandfather been alive to-dav he would have been .108, so it is not. so far for us to go back. ANY OTHER RELATIVES ? “As far as we know there are no other relatives out here, although there may be. My mother, four daughters,, and two grandsons came out together, my father and Air. Ferriday coming out prior to us, so our own family is the only ones we know of. Aly mother, before' leaving England, met. the gentleman who holds the deeds of the cottage of Alarksi-by-thc-sea. Captain Cook’s father died at this cottage, also his daughter, and they were all laid lo rest in Alarksi churchyard. “The first monument which was put up to Captain Cook’s memory was by Admiral Emerson, on his estate at High Cliff. It is kept in repair out of his estate, and can bo seen for miles and miles in Yorkshire. “Captain Cook’s widow was a native of Aliddlesborough. and was a good ami pious woman, spending the anniversary of Captain Cook’s death always with her Bible and in prayer.
