AN AMAZING SPECTACLE.
AFTER THE DERBY,
SCENE ON EPSOM DOWNS.
MOTORS IN THE MUD
(Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) (Received June 6, 1 p.m.) LONDON, June 5.
The Epsom Downs was an amazing spectacle in the morning, with derelict motor-cars, motor-coaches and lorries, which went to yesterday's Derby and had been left overnight, sunk in the mud.
Over 10 omnibuses were thus stranded. Many passengers slept in them. A breakdown gang was busy throughout the night liberating vehicles. Steam cranes were sent out to assist in the work. Gipsies, farmers, and others reaped rich rewards in helping out private car owners.
To-day, though the weather is fine, the stewards, owing to the state of the ground, took the unprecedented step of abandoning the first race and postponing another. The remaining races were run on a circular track, which had not been seriously affected.
