ANXIOUS MOMENTS.
DANGLING OVER A RIVER
DOCTOR'S TRYING ORDEAL
CHRISTCTIURCH, Monday. A Kaikoura medical man had a thrilling experience recently. He was called to the Clarence river district to attend a case of sickness and was taken over the river early in the morning. The river rose rapidly and the punt was put out of action.
The problem became how the doctor was to get back. The bridge was washed away last year but a wire rope had been stretched across for the conveyance, of the mails, and it was resolved to make use of this, the distance to the broken end of the bridge being about three chains. The doctor was "hooked on" and willing band's assisted to haul him over.
About midway across there was the. usual sagging of the rope. The men pulled, the doctor dangled in mid-air and the swirling waters were rushing be'low. It was a trying ordeal, but in the end the doctor was safely landed, his countenance bearing a smile of satisfaction that matters had turned out so well.
