EAST COAST RAILWAY.

PROGRESS AT TAURANGA

CONSTRUCTION OF STATION

TAURANGA, Monday

Tenders have closed for the erection of a milway station at Tauranga. The date fixed for the completion of the work is June £O. The successful tenderer will, therefore, have to lose no time in getting to work. The fact that the building is to be completed by June 30 leads to the assumption that the opening of the line into Tauranga. will take place round about that date. Although much remains to be done the work is sufficiently advanced to permit of the opening in about two months if the department decides to so arrange. _ Another steam navvy is being installed on the eastern side of the harbor, and as soon as it is working the reclamation still remaining to be done will be pushed on rapidly. The main line is already laid and ballasted to the station site, and the work of putting in the necessary sidings is being vigorously prosecuted. The goods shed is nearing completion and the necessary road formations to give access to both the. passenger station and the goods shed will be put in hand almost immediately.

The passenger platform, which will be. situated on the extremity of the reclaimed land, near the Waikaraeo Estuary, is to be 400 feet long. The station" building will be 103 ft long, giving accommodation of a complete nature, meeting all probable requirements for some years to come. In addition to the passenger station and goods shed the plans provide for the provision of a loading bank and an engine shed and turntable.

The department is not overlooking the necessity of getting ahead with the bridge across the Waikaraeo Estuary, and the making of reinforced concrete piles is proceeding. The bridge will consist of concrete piers built on concrete piles, with steel plate girder deck spans. It will have nineteen 25ft spans.
