ALLEGED SLANDER.
CLAIM AGAINST JOURNALIST. (Per Press Association.) PALMEIISTON N., this day In the Supreme Court an action was commenced in which Ernest Ball, tobacconist, of Fox ton, ciaims from .John Knowles Hornhlow, journalist, of Foxton, iiIOGD damages for alleged slander. The plaintiff alleges that in November last the defendant in the main street of Fox ton, falsely and maliciously spoke and published concerning plaintiff the following words: "You are a bookmaker, and are breaking the law every day," such words meaning that plaintiff had committed and was committing a criminal offence. The defendant denies that he spoke and published concerning the plaintiff the words complained of or similar words. Ik- denies also thai the words complained of have the meaning alleged, or any defamatory meaning. Filrther, if spoken by him, they were true in substance and fact. The evidence is proceeding.
