ENGINEERING.
DR. GRUNDY’S APPOINTMENT.
(Special to the Herald,) CHRISTCHURCH, this day
Dr. R. H. Grundy, doctor ol philosophy (engineering), B.E. (honors), who was recently appointed demonstrator in engineering at the Canterbury College, has arrived in Christchurch. Dr. Grundy, who is a young man, gained his degrees at Liverpool University, where he did research- work in the laboratories for somo time. He specialised in marine engineering, but he has kept -pace with developments in the other departments of engineering. He is an associate member of the Institute of Naval Architects.
Dr. Grundy, when interviewed, said the greatest modem developments in marine engineering were the geared turbine and the Diesel engine. Since the war the British factories had been making great headway in the manufacture of Diesel engines, and now they were able to compete quite successfully against the German type. Speaking of shipbuilding, Dr. Grundy said lie thought it had been the Worst hit industry in England. The present indications were, however, that the position wasi improving as trade l got. better. The general trade position in England had been very bad since the war, but the position was improving steadily now. The present political position in England was interesting, and in spite of the pessimistic prophesies made by the Tory press, the Labor Government was doing good work. It depended in a. de-. gree upon the Liberal party, and that meant that extreme views were modified.
The Liverpool Engineering School, said Dr. Grundy, is the- largest one in the United, Kingdom. Just after the war ended there were 15C0 students attending lectures there, but now there are only about 4CO.
