THE POLITICAL OUTLOOK.

PROSPECT OF LABOR GOVERNMENT. (Ek:c. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Sydney Sun Cables.) LONDON, Jan. 1. (Received January 2,2 p.m.) The Times declares nothing would be more damaging to the future of the older parties than to attempt to prevent Labor from forming a Government merely because it is Labor. A majority of the electorates, which afforded ]*abor a chance of governing, will condemn as unconstitutional an unfair combination to that end. England's trust that a Labor Cabinet will think and act as Englishmen is coupled with the certainty that the trust will be withdrawn if abused. These facts afford grounds for regarding 1924 hopefuliy.

LABOR PARTY'S VIEWS

NO PAST ENTANGLEMENTS

(Received Jan. 2, 2.40 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 1

Mr. Thomas, speaking at Derby, said that attempts by certain sections of the press to frighten people would be amusing but for the bad effects abroad, where people were forced to the conclusion that Britain was plunging headlong into bankruptcy. "These people," said Mr. Thomas, "cannot really believe that Labor is ignorant of the value of British credit. If Labor is called upon to take office it will bo -unfettered by any alliance or agreements. It will be a grave political risk, but it will be necessary for the party to do its duty, carrying on the King's Government. We shall attempt to establish peace abroad, and having no past entanglements we ought to have a good chance to succeed. Wo shall also attempt to substitute work for doles, which are demoralising the people, so we are entitled to ask for a fair deal."
