TIMBER ROYALTIES.
(per Press Association.l TAUMARUNUI, this clay. At the Timber Royalties Commission the chairman of the Tamnartinui County estimated that the County required £365,000 for metalling roads, and contended that half the timber royalty /djopjd bo paid to the local body. Another witness said bis district had pot received apy royalty, though the Government had drawn £50,000. They had always been turned down on account of the Main Trunk Act of 1899. - Mr. Campbell, Conservator of forests, contended that local bodies were pot entitled to a timber royalty, and must depend on grants for maintaining their roads. He urged that great cape should he exercised ip 'reserving forest areas. One more mistake would be fatal.
