WAIROA RACING CLUB.
APPEAL TO PARLIAMENT. (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The difficulties of the Wairoa. County Racing Club tire explained in a petition to Parliament, presented by Mr. W. 13. Lysnar, praying that legislation be passed giving the club relief from payment of £927 due for the totalisalor tax divident duty and default penalties. It is also asked that future totalisator and dividend taxes be reduced to enable tho club to carry on its operations. Tho club’s balance-sheets are attached, showing a loss in the year 1921 amounting to £260. The loss in 1922 amounted to £653, while the loss last year was £332. These losses are attributable to the heavy taxation on small country clubs, particularly severely felt during the period of financial depression. When the club made profits in previous years it applied them to increasing the stakes, and making improvements on tho course. To enable the club to carry on this year members were obliged personally to guarantee the overdraft at the bank. Tho stakes were reduced this year, but loss again occurred, and unless relief is granted the petitioners believe it will become necessary to wind up the club’s affairs.
