BRISBANE MYSTERY.
STRANGE EARTH TREMOR.
SYDNEY, July 7.—Brisbane has just experienced a mysterious earth tremor which has startled tho whole of the population. Houses rocked, windows were broken, and tho occurrence is not likely to be forgotten. Information was also received in Brisbane from Stradbroke Island that loud reports and. rumblings had been heard. It is asserted that one of the hills had dropped 20ftA controversy has arisen whether or not it was responsible for a gas explosion in a manhole ci an electric and gas main, which, accompanied by a terrific detonation, occurred three-quarters of an hour later. In one suburb, where the houses received a severo shaking, thoro was a loud crash, and everything in tho house staggered and shook. Professor H. C. Richards, geologist at tho Queensland University, said that in the absense of accurate details it was difficult to make a statement. He pointed out that there was on© aspect which would serve as a- guide. In June, 1918, Brisbane experienced a similar visitation, caused in that instance by a cleavage in the rock formation off Breakwater Spit, north of Sandy Cape. If tho disturbance had been experienced in the Maryborough and Gympio districts, a similar cause might b© laid at the door of tho present tremor. One resident said that his house rocked like a boat; a clock which had been wound recently, stopped; tho rooster began to crow, and altogether an eerio feeling prevailed.
