THE BEEF CAMPAIGN.

COMPARISON OF PRICES.

tper Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, last night

The Meat Producers' Board, in a circular letter, asked for the eo-opora-libii of tho Cantorbury A. and P. Association in its "eat more beef" campaign. When the letter was discussed at a mooting of the general committee of the Association, the chairman (Mr. It. E. Alexander) remarked that if the general public got beef at a price proportionate to that at which butchers i ought it there would be little need for a campaign. Beef,'through being bought at' certain rates at the yards, was just as dear as ever to tho consumer. If tho Board was going to control prices for export, why should it, not control prices iu the Dominion and so encourage cousumers to eat beef'/

>Mr. 11. S. S. Kyle asked if that should not bo done by tho Board of Trade.

The chairman said he did not think that the attention of that Board had l-een called to tho matter. It was a very serious matter to the producers of tho Dominion. Mr. K. J. S. Murobison said that there was a body in Christchurch enquiring at present as to tho cost of landing mutton and beef into the butcher shops, tho idea being to test if tho butchers were putting prices too high. Tho chairmuu remarked that tho butchers were buying and selling their meat at disproportionate prices. It was decided to write to the Hoard of Trade drawing attention to the disparity between the buying and selling price of beef wholesale and retail.
