DOG TRIALS.

SUCCESSFUL -MATAWAI MEETING

Tim annual sheep dog trials otf the l Matawai Club were concluded on 'Saturday. In the opinion of competitors ami spectators, the trials were highly successful, despite the prevalence of bad 1 weather which made l conditions on the trial ground rather miserable. Even the boisterous weather ,did not keep away a, large number of spectators, and the etntriub were easily a. record. The competition stewards, notably Messrs W. J. Scholium and l 11. Melville, were well up in their work and kept the trials moving without loss of time. Mr. N. cleLnutour, president of the club, earned the thanks otf tluv committee for his arrangements for the comfort, of the competitors, while Mr. W. Tucker, the energetic secretary, capably fulfilled his onerous duties. Mr, Chris. Kot'te, of Opotiki, was the judge, and gave every satisfaction in bis awards. Mr, Scholium granted, the use of very suitable puddocks for the trials, and Messrs Gray Bros and U, Cordon loaned' sheep. The special prizes were valuable and numerous, and: added greatly to the keenness of the competitions l . A social and 1 dance held on Friday evening at the Mntawai Hall, in connection with the trials, was attended l by a record crowd, while a smoke concert on Saturday evening, presided] over by Mr. deLautour, was also a most successful function. Mr. Korte, responding to the toast in his honor, remarked that while the work of the winning dogs in tho trials had been very good, there had been a lack of training shown by some of the entries.
