With the mark hovering around 8000 to the dollar, German shipowners lucky enough to salvage a vessel in distress arc in a position to enrich themselves almost beyond the dreams of avarice in their own native currency. A striking illustration of the fabulous profits to be made in bringing- a disabled vessel to safely was afforded last month when the British Admiralty Court awarded the Hamburg-American liner Fuerst Buelow the Mini of L 4200 for towing to a- safe haven Hie Greek steamer Autonios Sfafhntos, which broke her rudder shaft in mid-Atlantic during bad weather Inst Ala v. At the rale of exchange prevail ing on the day the Court rendered its decision the sum awarded amounted to 147.000,000 marks, or more than the Hamburg- American Line's entire pre war capital. This recalls tho ease, of a steamer, which arrived nl Hamburg .and had to make a. deposit of 20 per cent, in connection with a general average claim, says an Eastern exchange. This deposit was paid in marks which were immediately exchanged into sterling and sent to London. The final statement of the claim has just been compiled, and a

return has to he made, but owing to the fall in the value of the mark, those who made the. deposit in Hamburg received a balance which, in marks, Considerably exceeds the amount of the original deposit. It is reported that another Germnn warship, is to he. converted to. a motor cargo vessel. The latest ship is tho Frithjof, a sister vessel to the Odin and Aegir. " Built in 1891, the Frithjof, as a. coastal defence cruiser, had a displacement of 4100' tons, while after conversion the deadweight carrying capacity will be about 2000 tons. Presumably, as in the case of the two former ships, submarine engines will bo installed. The Odin is fitted with twin-screw M.A.N, six-cylin-der plant, normally running at the reduced speed of 350 r.p.m., and reached 10 knots on trials. The owners of the three vessels tire Reederei Arnold Bernstein, Hamburg. Eight warships are included in the Odin class, an}l these vessels were all built between 1889 and 1895. .
