The. though speedy, could hardly keep steerage way against the storm, and from noon, on December 21 to noon on December 22.sliei progressed only 54 knots. The Canterbury Shipping Company’s new steamer Gale has arrived at- Lyttelton from London after an uneventful voyage. On January 16 thei Gale called at- Pitcairn Island. Two boatloads ‘ f islanders, including one. woman, Mrs Christian, the wife of thei “Governor,” boarded the vessel and! remained for half an hour. The islanders presented the Galo with a generous supply of fruit, and the vessel brought away a bag of mail. The Gale is four years, old', and was formerly named! the Rawlinson. She is practically a sister ship to. the- company’s Breeze. ■ She ■will dock this week foil' cleaning.andi painting, and' will enter the Dnqedi.n-Wangamii trade at the end of this week. Captain P. J. How narrowly the vessel escaped being a total loss is told' by the present commnndbr,© Captain J. J. Cameron, who was master of the vessel when the accident occurred. Besides damage, on deck there was a 6ft hole in her hull through which the water rushed 1 in and filled! No. 2 hold. The hole in the hull was only 3in. away from the dividing bulkhead' between Nos. 2 and 3 holds. Had! this bulkhead been -broken, No. 3 as well as No. 2 hold would have been flooded, and it is very doubtful if the Remuera would have floated. As it was, about £250,000 worth of cargo was damaged 1 and had' to bn Sold. During the Reinuera’s prolonged stay in England- for repairs she was converted 1 from a coal to an oil burner.
