LOWE STREET TAXI STAND

OBJECTIONS FROM RATEPAYERS. The recent establishment of a taxistand in Lowe street, pending the reconstruction of leel street, lias given rise to much uiscussion in the Borough Council, and the matter was again brought up last evening, when a petition was received from a number of business people, whose premises are located in Lowe s.reet.

The petition asked for relief from the inconvenience caused by the presence of the taxi-stand in the position allocated to it. The text of the petition was as follows:—"We, the undersigned ratepayers and occupiers of premises in Lowe street, between Gladstone road and Childers road, wish to impress upon you the inconvenience to us attendant upon the presence of the public taxistand in one of the narrowest and busiest streets in Gisborne. There being barely room for a car to turn in the street even when •empty, the presence of the taxi cars almost prohibits the convenient use of the street.. Further, the regulation by which occupiers of business premises whose business necessitates them having their own cars in immediate proximity, are prevented from having their cars opposite their own premises, should be amended without delay, and we request you to do so. Surely we are as much entitled to consideration as owners of taxi-cars. AVe pay heavy rates lor little.enough return, and we consider Ave are entitled to use our own space, not give it up to others whoso presence interferes with our business. Lowe street is particularly unsuitable for u taxi-stand, being- so veiy busy, and having numerous tenants whose clients are entitled to call on them in cars. Customhouse street and Grey street on the cast side, have no business premises, while they are of such ample width that no inconvenience to traffic can bo caused by a taxi-stand there, while they will serve the general public equally as well as Lowe street. Wo desire you to take immediate steps to remedy this matter.' The petition is signed by 21 business men" on behalf of various firms. "I thought that last tune we had this regular question before us, we had reached finality in the matter, but it has cropped up again," said the Mayor. "They have done the thing thoroughly," remarked Cr. Ball. It was pointed out that the signatures included most of tiro business men on tho street.

The Mayor threw out the suggestion that the matter be deferred for a, full meeting of the Council. "It's a very awkward question," Cr. Ball said, and he asked when the Pee! street concreting would be finished? Cr. Coleman: Haven't they hod enough of it there? The Mayor's suggestion was adopted.
