ALL BLACKS’ RUNAWAY VICTORY

The weather was fine- The match resulted in a runaway ■victory for the- visitors, .who generally ignored the opposition. The New South Wales team, though they scored 19 against 56 by the Blacks, earned considerably less, several of their scores being directly attributable, to the daring manner in which the New Zealand backs initiated attacking movements near their own goal, thus offering a premium to opponents smart enough to intercept. Both spells were more or less similar, with Beilis leading the vanguard through the opposition repeatedly, all the team participating in passing rushes, the ball flying 'from player to player in a. fashion bewildering to the, Blue defenders. The first half ended—New Zealand 31 points. New South Wales 8. Beilis, • Peterson, Richardson, Whyte, Ford and M. Nicholls scored one try each, tho last-named converting five tries, and Steel kicked an excellent ]xm ilty goal from near the centre. McKay and Cooney got tries for the home side. Mingay goaling one. HAWKE’S BAY DEFEATS WELLINGTON. per Press Association.* WELLINGTON, last night, Wellington was defeated by Hawke's Bay in the Ranfurly Shield match todav by 19 to 9. About four thousand were Y>resent. Hawke’s Bay proved superior in every department, though the play in the second spell was even. The forwards wore well matched. Hawke’s Bay was superior in the loose and tho home team in the scrums. Play was tame at first, but following on a terrific pace w;is set by the visitors, whose first score was by Barclay, near the corner. Yates failed. iStonden (Wellington) next got over but King failed. Scott next scored for the visitors and Yates converted. Yates then kicked a goal from a penalty. Udy (Wellington) scored the next try but King failed with the kick. The score at half-time was 11 to 6 in favor of Hawke’s Bay. In the second spell, Wellington had the best of the play i'or a time, but- the visitors worked * their way down the field by a succession of scrums, McComb diving over from the ruck, but Yates failed to convert —Hawke’s Bay 14, Wellington 6. Wogan crossed for Wellington ' v a good solo effort, but the try was disallowed for a knock-on. Brownlie (Hawke’s Bay) made a great sprint and the passing ended up in Kirwan scoring, and Yates converted.—Hawke’s Bay 19, Wellington 6. Wellington’s last score was the result of a fine burst by the forwards, who threw the ball about almost like backs. Ryan scored, but the kick was n failure. The local men were attacking at the finish, but on the day’s play the visitors well deserved their win.

OTHER MATCHES. (Per Press Association.! DUNEDIN, last night. An attendance of 8000 watched the representative match between Otago and Canterbury at Carisbrook to-day. Otago won by ■ fifteen points to nine, victory being due to the superior pace of the backs, who also bandied tho ball very well. Stewart, tho Otago wing threequarter, secured all bis tries by'outpacing and 1 side-stopping the Canterbury backs. ■ Tries for Otago were scored by, Stewart, (3), Nfcackerth and Knox, and for Canterbury by Waghorn and Anderson, and the latter kicked a penalty goal. In the first snell the game was of an even nature. -Mattson and Oran’ scored for Auckland, but Tfwerson failed to converts Hamilton scored for Waikato but O’Brien failed with the kick. The, result was a win for Palmerston North by 6 points to 3. after a highly exciting game, especially in the latter half.
