ROWING.
Further racing in connection with the G.R.C.’s President’s Fours (Mr. C. W. Muir’s Cup) took place over the week-end on the Taruheru course, some fine contests resulting. In the first, W. Swinncrton (stroke), G. C. Jones, F. Allan, and W. Snowsill met J. D. Martin (stroke), G. Stone, G. Johnson, and G. Smith, and won by a length. The losing crew was unfortunate in having trouble with a seat, but in view of the position of the crews at the time this occurred, It was not considered necessary to again row the race.
The next race was the first of the second round, W. Hankey's crew meeting and defeating by a narrow margin that stroked by A. G. Arthur. The -'.-finish was unexpectedly close, Arthur having put up a splendid fight'all the way. Hankey’s spurt at the finish decided the race, which was practically level throughout the course. After winning by default from A. Lentell’s crew in the first round, W. Lahglands (stroke), X. Gcdyo, Hunter, and G. Howell, went up against T. Hay’s crew. He had a comparatively easy win, after holding the lead throughout. The last, race of the third round was rowed between S. Holmes’ and "VV. Swinnerton’s crews, and a Spirited contest resulted in a win for the latter. Swinnerton had the inside course, and it is likely that had the toss resulted the other way, Holmes would have won the race. The semi-finals of the scries rVill lie rowed this evening. W. Hankey meets \V. Swinnerton. and T. Hay meets F. H. Jones, who had the*bye in the second round. The final will bo rowed to-morrow evening.
