ROME, Feb. 3

The enclosure of the Cardinals was a picturesque ceremony. Many ladies and Roman nobility, magnificently robed, also representatives of the Italian Catholic diplomatists, assembled at the Sala Regia, where the ralatine Guard and Noble Guard were on duty. Thence they passed the Pauline Chapel and watched the Cardinals’ procession to the Sistine Chapel, where a glimpse through Hie doorway showed that each Cardinal had a throne with voting slips on the desk in front. The Cardinals appeared to he mostly wearing violet mantles and red birettas, They wqre headed by Cardinal Vannutelli, with Cardinal Loguo following. Then came Cardinal Gnsquet in black Benedictine mantle, followed by two Dominican Cardinals. Other notable figures were Cardinals Boggialo, Merry Del Valj Merrier, and Kakowski, who is of great height, and was another impressive personality. After intoning Novi Creator, the procession of Cardinals left the Pauline Chapel and went to tho Sistine Chapel. As they vanished the order “Exeunt omnes ’ was given, and all spectators retired, leaving the Cardinals and their staffs to work the election. The Cardinals will next he seen surrounding the new Pope. Meanwhile a. huge crowd of tourists and others gathered in the square. Tho first Papal ballot was resultless. A second column of block smoke ascended at 5 o’clock, and told the crowd that the second ballot had failed. Reports say that tho second vote showed Cardinal La Fonline gaining ground. ROME, Feb. 4. The third and fourth Papal ballots were resultless.
